Spotting

Note observez l'immatriculation de ce cesena...

What spotting is?
For me, it is the easier way to live my keen on airplane. Invented by English during the World War II, the spotting was used in first to permit to the whole population to join the war effort. Indeed, the radar was still not invented, and civilian population are asked to immediately signal all aircraft traffic in the sky, allied or not (position, direction, fast, altitude, type and number of aircraft...)
After the war, by interest or by boring, few people are continued to spot (for airplane, but also for boat, train ...)
The activity consist to found an observance point, and to count the traffic (timing, type, registration number…).
Even if there is nearly as much spotting type than spotters, some tendencies are distinct.
Today, most of the spotters don’t note the passage time of the plane, they only profit of the passage of the plane and collect the registration number. To be recognize and validated in the « palmarès » of the spotter, the picture must be a good quality, and the registration number totally visible, and readable.
For other one, only have nice pictures (sometimes, it’s really work of art) is sufficient.
At last, just go around an airport when the weather is nice, and you can constate that finally, lots of people are just looking the airplane traffic.

For the law, I’ve no idea of what’s happened out of France. In France, no special authorisation are needed, at the condition that you respect the road law, the barriers, … As I know, only the airport of Roissy Charles de Gaulle need a special authorisation.
Note: the use of special radio to listen the conversations between the plane and the control tower is largely common. However, although tolerated, it is not authorized by the law. Most of the time, nobody will say to you anything, but it is possible that we ask you to switch off and to tidy up your equipment. In case of refusal to obey, you can be seized the equipment.

Some rules to respect: I'll show you here my best spotting area, and the tips I've learned to make it easier. However, to do not let you have any problems, I'll ask you to respect some rules if you decided to go near the airports.
-Never fit you in danger! A little bit of good reflexion, we didn't stand in the middle of a road, a ravine or ditches are potential danger... The list is long...
-Don't put another people in danger! This one is join the first one... If you brake hard with your car, or park it on the road, you'll be in danger, but also the other people around you...
-Sometimes, the temptation is really strong, but an interdiction panel, or a fence must not be passed without agreement... Respect the law and the private propriety...
Small advice: think to go on the web site of the airport where you want to go before to go for check the time table... The traffic changes a lot in function of the hour and of the day... Do also careful to the wind direction: an airplane always flight in front of the wind...

In the next article, I’ll share with you my favorit spot area:
Leaving near Lyon, I've the luck to have an international airport near my home: Lyon Saint Exupéry.
Not fare of my home, I’ve got also the airport of Bron.
I'm travel also sometime (not sufficiently) to the airport of Déols, in Chateauroux.
I've got some attachment in Chambery.

Games area:
In Saint Exupéry: One of the main French airports. Here, you will see essentially big civil liners, and regional planes.
1) Coming from Lyon by D154, go on the D29 direction Crémieux. After nearly 300 metres, go to the mud way on the right. Set at once to the left. Arrived at the top, you can park on an esplanade where from you will have seen on tracks and airport. Furthermore, you will be glanced through at very low height by the plane in short final.

2) Still coming from Lyon by D154, go to D29, but this time in the direction of the airport. Park your car is not evident here. I council you to park near the area of reception of the travellers people. Then, walk in the direction of the old Crémieux way, up to the wire netting of the airport. You will be less fare of the track than in the point N°1, but paradoxically, the visibility is less good here.
3) By leaving the point 2, go in the direction of the airport by the road which follows the open pit. When you arrive at the panel marking the beginning of the reserved zone, you will have a beautiful sight on Tristar and end of track. I’ve heard that the access to Tristar is authorized without accreditation. But as I had no confirmation from the management of the airport, I prefer to ask you to stop there.
4) Follow D29 in the direction of the North. Crossed the airport, continue on the D517e during nearly 3 kilometres. After the two large curves, go on the mud way on the right, at the level of the end of the track. Some bench are installed there, and the view on the track and on the airport is open.
5) I have still never used this point, but it adorned me promising for days or the wind comes South. Carrefull however, because the point is in edge of road and adorned me dangerous.
Leaving the previous point, set in the North. In therond point, set to the right. You will be there just at the end of track. The inconvenience, it is that the track is in overhang, and that we do not see either the airport, or the track. But there, the airplane altitude will be very low when the wind come from south.
In Lyon Bron:
Smaller, it reception aeroclubs airplane and private planes. The track being long and less used than Saint-Exupéry, so, sometime, there is some pleasant surprises.
1) Park your car on the car park (free) of the airport. From the terminal to the shed of the aeroclub, you have wire nettings which are very close to planes. Note: look the registration number of this Cesena... Funny, isn't it?

2) In end of track, on D306. Carreful, because this point in border of national way is dangerous.
3) From the avenue Louis Mouillard, turn at once to the right as to go to the aeroport, then again, first one to the right. You will have a good place to see the helicopters of the securité civile, and the planes on the taxi just before the stop point.

On Chambéry:
Used mainly by aeroclubs in summer, the winter weekends, the infrastructures are saturated by charter flights.
1) The car park of the airport is free. The terrace of the bar of the airport will offer you an open view on the track. As well as all the wire nettings from the airport to the shed of the aeroclub.
Note: the ends of tracks seem to me to be promising, as well as the edge of the accessible wire netting from the D1504. Nevertheless, I went there never.

On Châteauroux:
The track is used for the practical school fees on civil liner, and the airport is used for maintenance and destruction of planes. It premise to have here some planes who you can’t see in other bigger airport.

1) Coming from Déols by D151a, in the rond point, take the direction of the airport on D920. Neighborhood 400 metres after this one, set to the right, then at once to the left. You will succeed here directly on the end of track, so close to the threshold of track as you can be in Bron.
2) Park your car on the free car park of the airport. The storage parks for planes is closer than this car park. According to the workload of the airport, you will be Surrounded with big planes carrier of any kind.
3) Go on the small roads in the North of the airport, you can go very close of the edge of the track. Be careful however not to lose you there, roads are neither without visibility and no indications …

How to control an airplane?

Control a car, or any terrestrial transportation device is simple, just have to turn the wheel, we push directly on the ground, this modify the trajectories of the vehicle. But for an airplane? Physically, it is in contact only with air… Then, how can we control it?

The winglets.
First of all, working principle of a winglet: The winglet is a mobile part situated on the end of the wing (cas N°1).
When we made it work, it turns around its axes (Cas N°2 and 3). When it turn, it can increase the wing profile, and so, the aerodynamic lift (cas N°2), or decrease the wing profile, and so, the aerodynamic lift (cas N°3).

An airplane is equiped with winglets and steering drift (see precedent article). These devices are not here only to made new failure, or to be decorative, it used to control the airplane in the sky. We will see how works the differents aerodynamic mobile elements whom the airplane are equiped. (exemple with an ATR 42):

In red: the deep steering. It’s run the slope of the airplane. When we pull on the deep steering commande in the cockpit, the deep steering winglets goes up. It made a depression under the wing, and a surpression above it. The rear of the airplane is then sucked down: the airplane attitude is nose up. It provokes the increase of the incidence angle and the rise of the airplane (Schéma 1).
When we push on the deep steering command, the opposite occurs (Schéma 2).

In yellow: The drift steering.
Its work is more intuitive. The pilot made it work with the Palonnier (Sorry, I’m not sur it is an English words… It’s also acts on the angle of the landing gear before). The palonnier, are the two pedals situated under the feet of the pilot. It serves for done a movement of lace to the plane.
Like for all the other winglets of the airplane, the pressure done on one side of the wing copled to the depression done on the other side made a movement of the airplane.

In green, the direction winglets. Indeed, to made turne a plane, done it some lace didn’t be sufficient. A successes corner is the addition of a lace movement and a roll movement. The roll movement is obtain by pushing the command on right to incline it on right, and on left to incline it on left. The direction winglet are situated at the end of the wings, and always work symmetrically opposed.
Lastely, in blue, the hypersustentateur winglets. It’s work by adding some area and some curve to the wing. When the airplane is at low speed and need a lot of aerodynamic lift, it is out and down at the maximum. When the airplane is at is cruise speed and altitude and the aerodynamic drag is more penalize, it is in position into.
