Air Berlin

J’ai récemment effectué un voyage en trois escales en avion.

Parti de Lyon, j’ai rejoint Rome sur une célèbre compagnie low cost Anglaise.

Ensuite, je suis partis de Naples pour rejoindre Frankfurt Am Main sur une compagnie Allemande : Air Berlin.

Enfin, la compagnie nationale Française m’à ramené de Düsseldorf à Lyon.

J’ai été tellement positivement impressionné par mon vol sur Air Berlin que j’ai décidé de vous parler de cette compagnie.

En 1978, un pilote Américain, Kim Lundgren, et l’un de ces collègues créent la compagnie Air Berlin Inc. Comme à l’époque, les compagnies allemandes n’avaient pas le droit de desservir Berlin (conséquence de la seconde guerre mondiale et des tensions politiques locales), la compagnie fut immatriculée dans l’Oregon.

Le premier vol décolla de Berlin pour Palma de Majorque le 28 Avril 1979, avec 178 personnes à bord. La flotte de la compagnie était alors composée de 2 Boeing 707. A ces débuts, la compagnie était spécialisée dans les vols charters.

En 1989, la compagnie fête ces dix ans. Le bilan est plutôt bon, avec 1.5 millions de passagers transportés sur 30 millions de kilomètres (l’équivalent de 748 tours du monde).

1989, c’est aussi la chute du mur de Berlin, la réunification de l’Allemagne. Les alliés n’ont plus de souveraineté sur le ciel berlinois. Si elle veux survivre, la compagnie doit s’adapter.

C’est ainsi qu’en 1991, elle abandonne son immatriculation Américaine et change de nom et d’actionnaire, devenant Air berlin GmbH & Co. Luftverkehrs KG, aux mains de Joachim Hunold.

En 1992, la flotte compte 6 Boeing 737-400. A ce moment là, elle possède la flotte la plus jeune d’Allemagne.

En 1997, la compagnie se lance dans les rotations régulières, tous les jours, des avions décollent à la même heure de Berlin, Dusseldorf, Munster, ... La formule remporte un franc succès, et permet en 1999 a la compagnie de passer la barre des 3 millions de passagers transportés.

En 2001, Air Berlin est la première compagnie à exploiter un Boeing 737-800 munis de Winglet sur une ligne commerciale. Pour information si vous ne le savez pas, les winglet sont les retours qui remontent au bout des ailes, et qui permettent d’éviter au vortex de bout d’aile de venir perturber le flux d’air sur le dessus de l’aile.

Entre 2002 et 2003, Air Berlin diversifie encore son offre en desservant les liaison intercitée en Union Européenne. Le succès est flagrant: le nombre de passagers transportés augmente de 25%, et le 31 Décembre 2003, la compagnie devient officiellement la deuxième compagnie allemande.

En 2004, la compagnie commence une coopération avec la compagnie Autrichienne Niki, et entre pour 24% dans le capitale de cette dernière.

En 2006, Air Berlin prends le contrôle de Dba, puis en 2006, de LTU...

Enfin, le 27 Juillet 2010, Air Berlin annonce qu’elle rejoindra l’alliance Oneworl à partir de 2012.

La raisons pour laquelle j’ai voulu vous parler de cette compagnie, c’est que le service à bord était meilleur que celui que j’ai eu sur mon vol de Düsseldorf à Lyon... Dans un cas, on ne nous à servis qu’un gâteau sec avec une boisson (avec un décollage à 13h00...), alors que air Berlin nous a offert des sandwiches et des boissons... Pour un prix divisé par trois sur Air Berlin!

La deuxième raison, c’est que bien que le voyage fasse le double de distance, le prix du billet était de moins d’un tier de celui de la compagnie Low cost....

Confort, meilleur service et abordabilité, ce voyage dans un avion moderne et flambant neuf m’aura vraiment laissé de bons souvenirs!

I’ve recently traveled by plane in three stops.
Coming from Lyon, I went to Rome on a famous English low-cost airline.
Then, I went from Naples to join Frankfurt Am Main on a German company: Air Berlin.
Finally, the French national compagny brought me back from Dusseldorf to Lyon.

I was so positively impressed by my flight on Air Berlin that I decided to tell you about this company.

In 1978, an American pilot, Kim Lundgren, and one of his team-mate are creating Air Berlin Inc.. As at this time, Germans companies were not allowed to serve Berlin (a consequence of World War II and local political tensions), the company was registered in Oregon.
The first flight took off from Berlin to Palma de Mallorca on the 28 April 1979, with 178 people aboard. The fleet of the company was then composed of two Boeing 707. At the beginning, the company was specialized in charter flights.

In 1989, the company is celebrating it’s ten years. The record is quite good, with 1.5 million passengers over 30 million kilometers (the equivalent of 748 laps of the earth).

1989 was also the fall of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of Germany. The allies have then no sovereignty over the Berlin sky. If they want to survive, the company must adapt.
Thus in 1991, it abandons its American registration and change name and a shareholder, becoming Air Berlin GmbH & Co. KG Luftverkehrs the hands of Joachim Hunold.

In 1992, the fleet includes 6 Boeing 737-400. At this point, it has the youngest fleet in Germany.

In 1997, the company launched into the regular rotation, every day, planes take off at the same time in Berlin, Dusseldorf, Munster, ... The formula has been a resounding success in 1999 and allows the company to pass the 3 million passengers.

In 2001, Air Berlin is the first airline to operate a Boeing 737-800 equipped with winglets on a commercial airline. For information if you do not know, the winglets are the returns going back to the wing tips, and that avoid the wingtip vortex from disrupting the airflow over the top of the wing.
Between 2002 and 2003, Air Berlin diversifies its offering by serving as liaison intercities on European Union. The success is obvious: the number of passengers carried increased by 25%, and on 31 December 2003, the company officially becomes the second German aeriale company.

In 2004, the company started cooperation with the Austrian airline Niki, and buy 24% of its capital.
In 2006, Air Berlin take control of Dba, then in 2006, LTU ...
Finally, July 27, 2010, Air Berlin announced it will join the alliance Oneworl from 2012.

The reason I wanted to tell you about this company is that the onboard service was better than what I had on my flight from Dusseldorf to Lyon ... In one case we were not served on a biscuit with a drink (with a takeoff at 13:00 ...), while Air Berlin has offered us sandwiches and drinks... For a price divided by 3 in Air Berlin!
The second reason is that although the trip to do the double distance, the price was less than a third of the low cost company's....
Comfort and affordability, this trip in a brand new modern aircraft and have me really left good memories!
